[Anwsered] Cannot remove/delete folder or contents from IE8 favorites after importing from IE7

Cannot remove/delete folder or contents from IE8 favorites after importing from IE7

I exported favorites from my old laptop (IE7/XP) to new laptop (IE8/Vista).  All favorites imported and are accessible from Favorites root level.  They link just fine.  However, IE8 created an additional folder in Favorites containing the same imported
favorites.  This folder has no name.  I can open the folder and view the contents, however, I cannot rename or delete the folder.  When clicking on a link within this unnamed folder I get the message "C:\Users\MyName\Favorites\   \FolderName refers to a location
that is unavailable.  It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network.
Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again.
If it still cannot be located, the information
might have been moved to a different location."  I get this message for every single favorite within this "no-name" folder.  The name of the folder appears to have three spaces in it.

I'd like to delete this folder and its contents, but cannot do it.  I have tried to delete it through organizing favorites with no luck.  Cannot even rename it.  I went to the Favorites folder under C:\Users\MyName and tried to delete the "no-name" folder,
no luck.  I cannot even delete the individual contents (favorites) within this folder.  I ran cmd.exe both as a user and an administrator and tried to remove the folder that way, but had zero luck with that because the folder has no name and I cannot change
the directory to access its contents or tell the command what folder to delete.  I did all of the above again in Safe Mode with no luck either.  This folder and its contents refuse to budge or respond to any commands.

Does anyone have any more suggestions?  I'd be very grateful.

Hi, Samhrutha.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer of assistance.  I went through all the steps as outlined and still am not able to delete the folder with no name containing favorites that "refer to a location that is unavailable."  It refuses to be deleted as do
the folders and shortcuts contained in the folder.  Do you have any other suggestions I might try?

Many thanks,
Jack

Try using  icacls.exe  (in an Admin mode cmd window)  to see what permissions you have given that folder now.
Compare with its container's permissions.   Note that you can use the command without any switches to display the permissions of the name you give as its first parameter.

The problem is going to be that the SID from the old system is still there and blocking access to the new system's SID.

HTH

Run CHKDSK

  • Go to the Start button.
  • In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • Reboot your computer.
An error might pop up:

"Access denied as you do not have significant privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode."

If you receive the above error message, it means you are not logged into you computer as an Administrator. If that's the case, follow these steps to run the command prompt in elevated mode:

  • Go to theStart button.
  • Go to "All Programs > Accessories" and right click on "Command Prompt".
  • Select "Run as Administrator".
  • In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
  • Reboot your computer.
